NORTHWESTERN Gansu province plans to invest in transport facilities over the next five years CNY200 billion (US$31.5 billion), to enable its cities to be linked by rail and its counties by highways. Overall railway mileage will increase to 5,000 kilometres, while its expressways combined stretch will be more than 1,600 kilometres.
New construction projects will make up 70 per cent of provincial roads covered by highways, 80 per cent of village roads by asphalt or cement roads, 76 per cent of shipping channels by middle class lanes. In addition, 10 new civil airports will be built in the province.
The total length of highways was 119,000 kilometres while the operational railways stood at 2,880 kilometres by the end of 2010. The fixed investment in transportation totalled CNY127.2 billion during the past five years, the biggest spending tranche on record, reported Xinhua.
