Korea Maritime Institute's manager Kim Hak-So emphasized, "For South Korea to top the offshore plant industry, offshore plant service industry must also be enetered."
Offshore plant service industry covers after procedure of offshore plant building, which are, transportation, set up, management and maintenance, disassembling, etc.
Korean major shipbuilders, Hyundai Heavy Industries, Samsung Heavy Industries and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering, have won newbuilding offshore plant order of $18.05bn just in this first half, exceeding $14.04bn from last year.
However, service industry is uncultivated field for Korea.
According to KMI, offshore plant service plant takes about 50% of overall offshore plant industry, with $150bn.
KMI suggests that Korean government need to pay more attention on offshore plant service related policy, offering information about foreign market, fostering professionals and leading company, etc.
And state-owned Korea National Oil Corporation and Korea Gas Corporation to make a way for Korean companies to expand into service field by enlarging equity.
Also, shipbuilders are suggested to promote joint venture or M&A with foreign leading companies and enter market accompanied with resource developer, shipbuilders, shipowners, etc.
