Hong Kong container traffic climbs 3 percent to 22.28 million TEUs

    The Port of Hong Kong’s container throughput in January-November 2011 increased by 3% compared to the same period of last year, to 22.28 million TEUs, the Port Authority statistics said.

    Container traffic at Kwai Tsing was up 1.8% to 15.92 million TEUs, other terminals handled 6.1% more than a year before, 6.35 million TEUs.

    In November, Hong Kong container trade was down 4.6% to 1.99 million TEUs, with a 4.5% throughput drop at Kwai Tsing to 1.41 million TEUs. Other terminals box volume shrank by 4.8% to 580,000 TEUs.

    Port of Hong Kong is one of the busiest ports in the world. In 2010, Hong Kong port's container trade totaled 23.69 million TEUs. The port is able to handle 456,000 ships a year.
