INTERNATIONAL air cargo at Detroit Metropolitan Airport has been found to contain wood-boring insects during inspections.
The Associated Press reported that US Customs and Border Protection officers discovered eight insects during six inspections in late January, and the wood packaging materials they were in were refused entry into the US. Customs and agricultural inspectors also found tunnels made by insects in wood packaging on 13 occasions last month.
According to customs the increased movement of wood products in international trade has allowed insects, other pests and pathogens to enter the US from overseas. Invasive species are said to have caused "extensive damage to trees and agricultural products."
