Port Nehru Truckers Call Off Strike
Date:2012-08-30 Readers:

Aug.30--Nhava Sheva Container Trailer Operators’ Association said stakeholders agreed to address the truckers’ concerns
Container trailer operators at India’s Port of Jawaharlal Nehru (Nhava Sheva) called off their strike Wednesday evening, allowing the movement of ocean freight traffic between cargo terminals and off-site storage yards.

The trailer group suspended operations Wednesday morning, calling for a hike in hauling rates and protesting deteriorating infrastructure at the port.

The settlement followed intense negotiations between the strikers, port officials and representatives of various freight station companies. The intervention of trade and user bodies also helped resolve the impasse.

The Nhava Sheva Container Trailer Operators’ Association, which represents the local trucking community, said stakeholders agreed to address the truckers’ concerns.

“We are making coordinated efforts to clear up the container backlog,” the group said.

Almost 65 percent of India’s total containerized export and import cargo moves through the three terminals at Nehru. Volume for fiscal 2011-12, which ended March 31, was an "all-time high" of 4.32 million 20-foot equivalent units.
