Tianjin to add 2.9 million TEU capacity over five years

    Tianjin Port Group plans to spend CNY45 billion (US$6.8 billion) on port and shipping facilities in the current five-year plan from 2011 to 2015, adding new capacity of 214 million tonnes and 2.85 million TEU.
    Xinhua reported that Tianjin, the biggest port in north China, and entry point to Beijing, plans to build 28 new berths and rebuild 27 berths this year. It will also create a 5.3 million square metre stack yard.
    In the period from 2006 to 2010, the port's shipping channel capacity rose to 250,000 tonnes from 150,000 in an earlier five-year plan period from 2000 to 2005. Terminal capacity increased to 360 million tonnes from 160 million tonnes. Container capacity increased to 10.8 million TEU from 3.6 million TEU.
    In the past five years, the port's throughput totalled 170 million tonnes with an average growth of 10.7 per cent per year. Container throughput totalled 40.3 million TEU, growing 15.8 per cent a year.
    In 2010, Tianjin handled 413 million tonnes of cargo, up 8.4 per cent year on year. Its container throughput increased 15.9 per cent to 10.1 million tonnes.
