Felixstowe, Britain’s largest container port, owned by Hong Kong’s Hutchison Group, came to a standstill yesterday as workers paused to pay their respects to a colleague as his funeral service began, reported the Evening Star (Ipswich).
Father-of-three Geoff Fuller, 49, died suddenly on November 12 – he had been a long-term sufferer from diabetes.
All operations at the Port of Felixstowe stopped as a mark of respect to Fuller, who had worked at the port for 29 years.
He was a team leader in the port’s computer department.
The minute’s silence, at 12.30 pm, was timed to coincide with the start of the funeral, which was held at St Mary’s Church in Woodbridge.
As well as family and friends, the funeral was attended by many current and former port employees, including Clemence Cheng, managing director of Hutchison Port Holdings Central Europe division, and former port chief executive Chris Lewis, now boss of rival port Southampton but who was at Felixstowe for many years and knew Fuller well from his own time working in the computer department.
Head of corporate affairs Paul Davey paid tribute to Fuller on behalf of the port community.
He had been a key worker for many years in the development of the port’s computer network and systems across the 700-acre complex.
“He was a much-loved colleague and greatly respected by everyone who worked at the port," said Davey.
