A NEW US$7 billion port area is being developed in Mesaieed, Doha, in Qatar, covering 26.5 square kilometres, is scheduled to open in February 2016.
Project leader Abdulaziz Mohammad al-Nuaimi said the new port is expected to be one of the largest sea freight gateways in the region, reports Arabian Business.
The port will feature five general cargo berths, four container berths, and a roll-on/roll-off berth, plus docking for tugs and pilot boats.
The first phase of the project is expected to be operational in 2014. By then, the port will have an annual capacity of two million TEU, which is to be increased "considerably" once the project is fully developed.
