Guangzhou Container Volume Grows 24.6 Percent
Date:2011-10-27 Readers:

But September gain will be followed by October slowdown, China operator says

Guangzhou Port Group reported a 24.6 percent year-over-year increase Wednesday in container volume in September, but the Southern China operator said it expects business to contract this month as the peak shipping season winds down.

The port group projected container volume would “slightly decline” from September, mirroring the slowdown operators across the trade world are seeing in Asia exports.

The 1.01 million 20-foot equivalent container units Guangzhou Port Group handled in September gave the port its third straight record quarter and 8.3 million TEUs in the first nine months of the year, 17 percent ahead of last year.

Guangzhou, in the midst of China’s largest industrial manufacturing region in the Pearl River Delta, saw three new services in September at its Nansha terminal – two intra-Asia operations by Maersk and PIL, and a connection to Africa by PIL.
