SINGAPORE's non-oil domestic exports (NODX) rose by 9.0 per cent in December 2011 compared to the same month a year earlier.
Year on year, total trade rose by 5.9 per cent in December 2011, following the 12 per cent increase in the previous month. Total exports grew by 7.5 per cent in December, after the previous month's 8.2 per cent expansion. Total imports increased by 4.0 per cent, following the 17 per cent rise in November.
On a month-on-month basis, NODX grew by 16 per cent in December, following the previous month's 5.8 per cent expansion, due to a rise in non-electronic NODX that outweighed the contraction in electronic NODX.
The total value of NODX reached SGD16 billion (US$12.52 billion) in December 2011, higher than the SGD14 billion registered in the previous month. The December NODX increase follows a rise of 1.4 per cent the previous month.
On a year on year basis, NODX to the European Union was up 12 per cent; Japan, up 26 per cent; South Korea, up 31 per cent; Malaysia, up 6.2 per cent; and Taiwan, up 6.0 per cent in December 2011.
On the other hand, NODX to Hong Kong was down 10 per cent); Indonesia, down 9.8 per cent; the US, down 4.2 per cent; Thailand, down 7.7 per cent; and China, down 1.4 per cent.
Non-oil re-exports (NORX), after a 4.1 per cent increase in November, contracted by 4.2 per cent in December compared to the same month in 2010, due to a decline in electronic NORX which outweighed the increase in non-electronic NORX, a government statement said.
