Texas-based Con-way Freight staff help foil bomb plot
Date:2011-03-03 Readers:

THE alert staff of Con-way Freight at its Lubbock, Texas, service centre recently spotted a suspicious package and notified authorities, thus thwarting a bomb attack against reservoirs and dams, nuclear power plants and the home of former US president, George W Bush.

"The shipment matched profiles in our security protocols for identifying shipments of a suspicious nature," said a statement from the Texas-based forwarder, reported London's International Freighting Weekly (IFW).

The sender, Ali-M Aldawsari, a 20-year-old student from Saudi Arabia, was arrested by the FBI and charged with attempted use of a mass destruction weapon to attack US targets.

FBI agents also found a diary belonging to Aldawsari at his apartment, which indicates he is a follower of al Qaeda and his plot was inspired by al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden's speeches.

Said prosecutor James Jacks: "This arrest demonstrates the importance of vigilance by the public and the willingness of companies to ask questions and notify authorities when they encounter suspicious activities."
