Hong Kong traffic volumes down 6 percent to 1.97 million TEUs

    Container throughput at the Port of Hong Kong in January decreased by 6% year-on-year to 1.97 million TEUs, the Port Authority statistics said.

    In January, container traffic at Kwai Tsing was up 1.2% to 1.53 million TEUs, other terminals throughput dropped 24.5% to 440,000 TEUs.

    Port of Hong Kong is one of the busiest ports in the world. In 2011, Hong Kong port's container trade totaled 24.4 million TEUs. The port is able to handle 456,000 ships a year.
