The port of Boston has applied for US$84m in federal stimulus money to build a new cruise terminal and re-establish a freight rail network serving dockside freight yards. The city's current cruise terminal is too small to handle larger vessels and their passengers, and the new facility would be able to handle up to three ships simultaneously and up to 4,000 passengers at a time. The city also wants to reintroduce a freight rail service to the port, with 6,000 rail cars of freight a year replacing 24,000 truck journeys. There are also several minor improvements in the plan, including renovating three run-down jetties for cargo berthing and ship repair. |
