A Russian seafarers' union has claimed that Somali pirates who have been holding the bulk carrier Ariana since May have threatened to kill the crew when the ship's fuel runs out. The union said that the situation on the vessel was "critical", that the entire crew of Ukrainians needed aid as water, food and medical supplies had run out, and that as soon as the generator fuel dried up, the pirates had said they would kill the crew.
