On September 20, 2011, the “Third Academic Symposium of Specialized Committee on Maritime & Admiralty Judicial Theory of China Society of Judicial Studies” was held in Shanghai Eiffelton Hotel. With the theme of “Deepening Innovations in Maritime Judicial Theory; Serving Shipping Economy Development during the 12th Five-year Period”, the symposium was organized by the Specialized Committee on Maritime & Admiralty Judicial Theory of China Society of Judicial Studies and Shanghai Higher People’s Court, operated by Shanghai Maritime Court, and co-organized by Shanghai International Shipping Institute (SISI). SISI’s involvement in contributions solicitation, paper appraisal and selection as well as other conference affairs had received high recognitions from the organizers and operator.
Wu Zhiming, Member of the Standing Committee of CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee and Secretary of the Municipal Committee of Political and Legislative Affairs, and Ying Yong, President of Shanghai Higher People’s Court and Director of Specialized Committee on Maritime & Admiralty Judicial Theory, addressed the symposium. Wan Exiang, Vice President of the Supreme People’s Court and Executive Vice President of China Society of Judicial Studies also delivered a speech, specifying future directions for maritime judicial affairs.

Opening of the Symposium
In the keynote speech titled “Accelerate the Process of Building a Great Shipping Power through Innovative Maritime Legal Service”, Li Gang, Secretary and Deputy Secretary-General of SISI, shared his views on the promotional effect of shipping on China’s economy and trade development, the establishment of the water transport regulatory system for ensuring China’s shipping development, and approaches to innovations in maritime legal service, etc. The concrete data and an in-depth but easily understood analysis won him warm applauses from the participants.

More than 100 participants including (e.g.) judges of top ten maritime courts, legal practitioners and researchers from around China attended the symposium, engaging actively in discussions on hot and difficult legal issues of common concerns. The symposium was successfully concluded amid warm applauses.
