The concept of “Gen-IV port” is an outcome of economic globalization, regional integration and the new requirement for port functions imposed by the future economic development. By analyzing the current study of Gen-IV ports at home and abroad, this research group summarizes the basic theories and drivers of Gen-IV ports, identifies the four progressive stages of its operation and management mode, and discusses port supply chain management, flexible port management and other concepts and approaches. On that basis, it provides the empirical analysis of the division of port generations and proposes relevant policies and suggestions for China to develop Gen-IV ports.
