The Pudong coastline boasts an advantageous economic and geological position for its valuable maritime resources beneficial for port transport development, continuously expanding intertidal zones, unique tourism resources and a variety of other natural resources. The main functions of the sea area include port shipping, sea use for engineering, undersea pipeline, coastal tourism, reclaiming land from the sea (beach), marine environment protection and eco-development. Although remarkable achievements have been made in exploiting and utilizing the coastline resources, which gives a strong boost to Shanghai’s economic development and urban construction, we must be fully aware that a wide range of environmental issues is to be studied and solved. These include the construction of large dumping sites and chemical industrial zones, the discharge of effluent and waste from large drain outlets and town enterprises into the river and sea, heavy metal pollution of sediments on tidal flat, negative impacts caused by the extensive reclamation of intertidal zones, and the protection and development of the north bank of Hangzhou Bay.
