The first group of 17 Chinese shipping professionals received certificates from the UK-based Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers and the Chinese Ministry of Transport for completing a training program.
The training was held in Shanghai Free Trade Zone from January to March. Antony Mason, former secretary general of the International Chamber of Shipping, and Vivek Jain, in dual capacity of a ship captain and a barrister, were invited to give lectures to the Chinese trainees.
Veteran Chinese shipping professionals were also invited to share their career experiences with the trainees.
The Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, founded in London in 1911, represents shipbrokers, ship managers and agents worldwide with 24 branches and about 4,000 members and fellows.
Julie Lithgow, director of the institute, said the shipping industry, like other sectors, needs a sufficient pool of experienced and capable professionals for its long-term sustainable growth.
