THE opening of the Turkmenbashi port in Turkmenistan on the Caspian Sea gives shippers another China-Europe rail route to consider, reports, reports IHS Media.
Shipments
would be railed to Turkmenbashi before loading on a ship across the
Caspian Sea to Baku, Azerbaijan, where they "make their way" to the
Georgian ports of Batumi and Poti shipboard re-loading across the Black
Sea to Romania, where the corridor terminates.
Turkmenbashi
port is part of the Europe-Caucasus-Asia (TRACECA) trade corridor
running from western China through Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan,
Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan to Europe.
Preliminary
estimates of US$5,500 to $6,000 per container would make it cheaper
than the $6,000 to $7,500 per container for China-Europe rail shipments
on Russia's Trans-Siberian Railway, says the report.
