DENMARK's Queen Margethe II has led a business delegation on a three-day visit to Ghana that included a visit to the Port of Tema that is currently undergoing a major expansion.

The Queen was accompanied by a business delegation to explore bilateral economic engagements with Ghanaian businesses in the food and agriculture, sustainability, maritime, infrastructure and railway sectors.

She first called at Tema port a berth five where a Danish vessel was discharging shea nut, one of Denmark's primary export commodities, reported GhanaWeb.

After watching the unloading of the bulk shea nut, the Queen was taken on a visit of the Tema port expansion site, a project being undertaken by Meridian Port Services (MPS), which comprises a consortium of companies including Denmark’s AP Moller Terminals.

So far on the Tema port project 70 acres out of 168 acres of land has been reclaimed from the sea for the construction of terminals and 1.8 kilometes out of three kilometres breakwater has been constructed.

The expanded facility at Tema port will have 17 berths, an annual handling capacity of 3.5 million TEU and will be able accommodate 13,000 TEU containerships when it is completed in the fourth quarter of 2019.

The first berth is expected to be operational by December 2018 followed by two additional berths six months later.
