THE Port of Houston posted a five per cent year-on-year decline in container volume to 250,000 TEU in January, marking the port's second busiest start to a year.
Loaded container imports totalled 121,578 TEU last month, which was the fourth highest month on record for imports, while loaded exports totalled 99,694 TEU, noted London's Container Management.
Said Port of Houston executive director Roger Guenther: "We are committed to do our part to keep international commerce flowing and to make sure consumers get their necessities, including food and medical supplies."
Bulk cargo was up 33 per cent in January compared to a year ago, with the import and export of bagged goods up considerably, although steel remains down.
Houston is the sixth largest container port in the United States and is the dominant container port on the US Gulf Coast, handling more than two-thirds of all the containers in the gulf.
