THE small parcels delivery arm of Deutsche Post's DHL Group, DHL Express, has entered into an agreement with SmartLynx Malta, a subsidiary of the largest aircraft leasing provider in Europe, to introduce two newly converted A321-200 freighters into its European fleet.
The A321F brings much-needed additional capacity in the face of soaring demand for e-commerce shipments and vital life-saving medical supplies worldwide, while improving the company's CO2 emissions.
"The partnership comes as both a confirmation and a recognition of SmartLynx Malta's standing in the aviation industry, and its place in supporting the growing demand for air cargo capacity," the announcement said.
This new agreement also marks the aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance (ACMI) wet-lease subsidiary's debut in the freighter market, a development which is also a reflection of the widespread growing demand for additional air cargo capacity.
SmartLynx, a member of the central and eastern European aerospace business conglomerate Avia Solutions Group, already has extensive experience of operating the A321 passenger aircraft range and is now also planning to add bring in two further A321Fs this year and up to four more units in 2022.
In January this year, DHL Express revealed it is investing in eight brand-new B777 freighters to meet continuous and future increases in global e-commerce volumes, an air cargo business segment which mushroomed by a remarkable 40 per cent in the fourth quarter of last year, reports London's Air Cargo Eye.
