Global Container Port Throughput Index drops 2.5pc in April

THE Global Container Throughput Index dropped 2.5 per cent to 137.6 points in April, down 141 points from March, reports the American Journal of Transportation.

Meanwhile, the Chinese index reached 147.1 points in April, making a 12 per cent annual gain. The top five Chinese ports were Guangzhou, Ningbo, Qingdao, Shanghai and Shenzhen handled 55 per cent of China's total throughput, with Ningbo leading 20 per cent annually and nine per cent monthly.

The index for Asia dropped 4.3 per cent to 131.9 points in April 2021 after reaching its highest level ever of 137.9 points in March 2021.

The Middle East and South Asia region index dropped 5.3 per cent monthly and up 22.2 per cent annual growth in April 2021.

Mumbai's Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust grew 65 per cent while the rival Port of Mundra soared 117 per cent.

The North America index dropped 6.1 per cent monthly to 156.5 points but was 25.3 per cent higher annually due to the Covid crisis.

The Port of New York registered a 27 per cent growth, Long Beach 44 per cent, and Los Angeles 37 per cent. These three hubs contribute more than 42 per cent of the total container throughput of North America.

The European Port throughput index fell 1.9 per cent to 122.5 points with a nine per cent annual improvement.

The Latin American index dropped three per cent in April 2021 to 123.8 points but was 9.6 per cent higher annually.

The largest Latin American gateway port, Santos, grew seven per cent over April 2020, but volumes declined 13 per cent compared to March 2021.

The Africa region index recovered 39.6 per cent annually and 6.7 per cent monthly.
