New box ship and bulker collide in Malacca Strait, causing oil spill
Date:2021-07-13 Readers:
THE 15,000-TEU Zepher Lumos collided with 76,000 dwt bulk carrier Galapagos July 10 in Malacca Strait off Melaka, Malaysia, halfway between Singapore and Port Dickson, reported Kiev's Maritime Bulletin, which specialises in marine casualties.

Both ships were proceeding in a westerly direction. Why they collided, is yet unclear. The Zepher Lumos struck Galapagos in starboard cargo deck area, inflicting heavy damage.

The Galapagos reportedly suffered a rudder failure that resulted in the ship crossing in from of the Zephyr Lumos.

Photos published by the Malaysian Coast Guard show an oil spill from the breached hull of the Galapagos.

Ships parted after collision and both were anchored - Galapagos near the collision site, and the Zepher Lumos to the north.

The British flagged Zepher Lumos was received from shipyard in January. She was en route from Singapore to Suez. The Maltese-flagged Galapagos was en route from Singapore to Visakhapatnam India.
