IMPORTS from Asia were up 34.2 per cent in Oakland from January to May, causing vessel delays, terminal congestion, and inducing the Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) to cut calls to the port from weekly to fortnightly, reports IHS Media.
The new rotation on the service will be Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, Busan, Long Beach and back to Qingdao. Otherwise, the Orient service will stop in Oakland after leaving Long Beach on the return trip to China.
Transpacific carriers initiated two first-call inbound services to Oakland in order to relieve pressure on the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
The import surge also exposed a labour shortage in Oakland, causing the International Longshore and Warehouse Union and the Pacific Maritime Association to launch a programme elevating 300 part-time dockers to handle equipment in Oakland container yards.
