SOUTH KOREAN's air cargo volume declined 8.7 per cent in May to 286,000 tons year on year because of fewer exports to quake-ravaged Japan, according to the transport ministry.
International air cargo fell 9.9 per cent to 263,000 tons, while domestic cargo increased 8.8 per cent to 23,000 tons, according to a Yonhap News report. Japan-bound shipments plunged 16.7 per cent as demand fell following the March 11 earthquake and nuclear crisis, the ministry said.
Incheon International Airport, South Korea's largest, handled 253,000 tons of air cargo, down 10.6 per cent year on year. Lesser airports, Gimpo, in western Seoul posted a 17 per cent gain while Gimhae to the south east was up 8.8 per cent year on year.
