US GULF Coast ports are seeing record container volumes in 2022, with the Port of Houston seeing a 14 per cent year-on-year increase in total TEU in 2022, reports New York's FreightWaves.
The port moved 3.97 million TEU, its highest total ever recorded. The port also set an annual tonnage record during the year, increasing 22 per cent and reaching 55.1 million short tons.
Steel imports increased 49 per cent year on year to 5.2 million tons in 2022.
Auto import units ended the year up seven per cent compared to 2021 while bagged goods imports were up 50 per cent.
General imports increased 45 per cent year on year in 2022 to 9.3 million tons, while container imports increased 15 per cent to 18 million tons.
"The volumes we've experienced this year at Port Houston have been incredible," said Port of Houston executive director Roger Guenther.
"The record growth seen over the last couple of years has been supported by continued investments in Port Houston terminals."
While the port reported double-digit growth at its Bayport and Barbours Cut container terminals from January through November, in December container volumes fell 12 per cent to 292,027 TEU.
Full import containers were down 18 per cent year over year in December to 132,055 TEU, while loaded container imports decreased 16 per cent to 142,674 TEU.
Ship calls for 2022 were up six per cent year on year in 2022 to 8,320. Barges calling at Houston were up five per cent to 3,709.
During December, ship calls rose three per cent to 694 vessels, while barges calling at the port fell 14 per cent to 261.
