UK transport minister's call for more EU air cargo security ignored
Date:2011-06-22 Readers:

A call by Britain's Transport Secretary Philip Hammond for other European Union nations to press ahead with plans to agree a Europe-wide security regime for air cargo following last November's failed parcel bomb plot has fallen on deaf ears until after summer, reports London's Financial Times.

The comments come as the minister is in Luxembourg for the EU Transport Council and is holding a meeting with counterparts from four other countries.

The report said his proposal failed to win a majority in a vote last week despite the backing of key aviation hubs such as the UK, the Netherlands, France and Spain, partly, as some countries abstained.

"Last year's plot to conceal bombs in toner cartridges served as a reminder that terrorists are always looking for ways to circumvent our security processes," Mr Hammond was quoted as saying. "While the UK enjoys one of the strongest transport security regimes in the world, aviation is a global industry and we must tackle this together."
