Cuba's Port of Mariel ready to dock neopanamax vessels
Date:2023-06-01 Readers:
THE administration of the Port of Mariel in Cuba's Special Economic Zone (ZEDM) has recently announced the completion of the bay's deepening project, allowing it to accommodate neopanamax vessels, reports Cuba Standard.

Located 45 kilometres west of Havana, Mariel Port can now handle the newest and largest container ships that transit the Panama Canal.

Neopanamax-class ships, with dimensions of 366 meters in length, 52 meters in width, and a draft of 15 metres, have a maximum capacity of 14,000 TEU.

This is a significant increase compared to Panamax vessels, which can only load a maximum of 5,000 TEU, roughly one-third of the Neopanamax generation. The expansion of the Panama Canal in 2016 made this substantial increase in capacity possible.

Although the Mariel container port, inaugurated in 2014, was initially designed to accommodate these new generation ships, the limited depth of 13 metres restricted access to only Panamax vessels until now.

The completion of the deepening project, which faced challenges due to the difficult topography, marks a significant milestone for Mariel.

For Cuba, the increased capacity brings a reduction in freight costs and expands the range of possible cargo routes for the island. Previously, Neopanamax vessels could not dock in Cuba, but now 60 per cent of the ships transiting the Panama Canal belong to this category.

Mariel Port is Cuba's largest and most modern port. Continuous investments have been made since its opening, increasing the original capacity from 250,000 to the current 800,000 TEU per year.

According to port authorities, if demand warrants it, the capacity can further expand to 3 million TEU by extending the pier.
