HD Hyundai to supply methanol fuel to Japanese shipbuilders

SOUTH Korea's HD Hyundai Co is supplying its first methanol burning Him SEN engine to Japan's Tsuneishi Shipbuilding to be fitted in four 5,800-TEU ships with delivery set for January 2025, reports Korea Economic Daily.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' Engine Machinery Business Unit recently signed a contract with Tsuneishi to supply the HiMSEN engine (8H32DF-LM) running on methanol as a dual fuel and a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) device for nitrogen oxides as a package.

HD Hyundai is also selling the engine to China and Europe, having received orders for 177 units to be fitted into 42 ships. The first methanol-powered HiMSEN engine was supplied to the 2,100-TEU Laura Maersk.
