THE Port of New York and New Jersey has announced that its container volume has fallen to pre-pandemic levels in the month of August, with a total monthly throughput of 662,740 TEU - a 21.4 per cent decline from August 2022 where the throughput amounted to 843,191 TEU.
With August's container volume, the Port of New York and New Jersey has handled a total of 5.1 million TEU in 2023, reports London's Port Technology.
In August, imports dropped by 18.6 per cent compared to the previous year, with a total of 348,921 TEU.
From January to August 2023, imports at the Port of New York and New Jersey amounted to 2.6 million TEU, which is 21.7 per cent less than the 3.3 million TEU handled during the same period in 2022.
The total exports in August amounted to 106,025 TEU, marking a 2.8 per cent decrease compared to the previous year.
Meanwhile, from January to August, there were 857,552 TEU of export cargoes, which represents a 1.5 per cent decline compared to the same period in the previous year.
The number of empty containers for export dropped by a significant 32.1 per cent in August, with a total of 206,064 TEU. Export empties added up to 1,638,833 TEU from January to August, marking a notable 28.6 per cent decrease compared to the same months in 2022.
In contrast, empty containers for import saw an 8 per cent increase year-on-year from January to August. Moreover, rail traffic experienced a decline of 15.4 per cent in August compared to the previous year, with a total of 56,469 TEU moved by rail. In the January-to-August period, rail volume was 13.2 per cent lower than the same period in 2022.
Earlier this year, the Port of New York and New Jersey announced that it handled a record-high annual throughput in 2022.
