Singapore to expand port
Date:2024-03-12 Readers:

The Port of Singapore Authority (PSA) has announced plans to expand its Jurong Island Terminal (JIT) to build a more sustainable, efficient and resilient supply chain.

The JIT, located on Jurong Island's northwest waterfront, reportedly offers twice-daily barge sailings, connecting Jurong Island shippers to PSA's main hubs in Tuas, Pasir Panjang and Blarney for access to global markets.

Jurong Island is the center of Singapore's energy and chemical industries. Managed by the Singapore Industrial Estate Corporation (JTC), the 3,000-hectare island is home to more than 100 global companies engaged in refining, olefin production and chemical manufacturing.

While containerized raw materials and finished products can be transported to Jurong Island by trucks, barges require less labor, do not cause road congestion and will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 30%.

Demand for barges at Jurong Island Terminal has been growing in recent years, with JIT's capacity reportedly growing 13% year-on-year in 2023 to a new record of 149,000 TEUs.

The expansion of JIT will reportedly increase its annual handling capacity to 300,000 TEUs to meet the forecast demand.

In addition, PSA will create new dangerous goods (DG) handling and cargo transshipment facilities to complement its portfolio of physical and digital solutions designed to help shippers better manage their inventories and supply chains.

The JIT expansion project, which is expected to be completed by 2025, is also said to contribute to the transformation of Jurong Island into a sustainable energy and chemicals park by 2030, in line with Singapore's Green Plan.

On March 8, PSA held a commemorative ceremony at its headquarters, PSA Horizons, in the presence of stakeholders and partners.

"The port has always been a gateway and enabler for the rest of Singapore's economic pillars, providing reliable, resilient and competitive access to global resources and markets," said Mr. Kok Swee Loong, Regional Chief Executive Officer, Southeast Asia, Port of Singapore Group.

"The collaboration between PSA and JTC in the expansion of JIT ensures that existing and future businesses in Singapore's energy and chemical industries can continue to benefit from sustainable growth for years to come."

Mr. Tan Yong Hian, Assistant CEO of JTC, said, "Jurong Island's barge traffic will continue to rise as the demand for sustainable logistics continues to grow, and JIT's expansion is a response to this growth, and working with our partners, including PSA, is a key step in our journey to make Jurong Island a sustainable energy and chemical park. "

In February, location data and technology platform HERE Technologies announced that it was helping PSA transform its container truck ecosystem.
