Saudi Rail, Maersk collaborate to increase intermodal
Date:2024-03-15 Readers:

SAUDI Railways Co (SAR) and shipping giant Maersk are joining forces to enhance the transportation network between the ports of Dammam and Riyadh, aiming to boost container movement via trains, reports Jeddah's Arab News.

Under a three-year agreement, SAR will collaborate with Maersk to increase the volume of containers transported between King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam and Riyadh Dry Port.

The deal, inked by SAR chief executive Bashar bin Khalid Al-Malik and Maersk Saudi Arabia CEO Mohammad Shihab, seeks to bolster container transportation between these key points while introducing innovative logistics solutions to enhance the Kingdom's competitiveness, according to the Saudi Press Agency.

This partnership aligns closely with the National Transport and Logistics Strategy, a pivotal aspect of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030.

The strategy aims to elevate the country's rankings on the Logistics Performance Index and enhance operational efficiency.

Additionally, the initiative is set to reduce truck congestion between Dammam and Riyadh, curtail carbon emissions, and preserve road infrastructure and safety, according to the SPA report.

Mr Al-Malik emphasised that this collaboration with one of the globe's leading shipping entities will fortify the nation's logistics sector and its services, paving the way for improved connectivity and efficiency.

"The agreement also highlights SAR's commitment to delivering innovative, safe, and sustainable transport solutions aimed at enhancing operational efficiency at King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam and the Riyadh Dry Port. These efforts accelerate container movements for both exports and imports, thereby enhancing the Kingdom's logistics performance," said Mr Al-Malik.
