Victoria International Container Terminal phase completed
Date:2024-03-14 Readers:

RECENTLY, Victoria International Container Terminal (VICT), operated by ICTSI at the Port of Melbourne in Australia, finalized Phase 3A of its expansion initiative, reports New York's Maritime Logistics Professional.

This development enables VICT to cater to neopanamax containerships, the largest vessels serving Australia.

These vessels can now navigate directly into Port Phillip and berth at VICT, the sole terminal in Melbourne equipped for their reception.

Moreover, VICT stands as the sole fully automated container terminal in the southern hemisphere.

The A235 million (US$155 million)expansion project progresses in two stages. Phase 3A, concluded in December 2023, augments the terminal's capacity 30 per cent to 1.25 million TEU.

Extending the quay by 71 metres to 735 meters, or 769 metres with the mooring dolphins included, enhances VICT's quayside capabilities, facilitating the simultaneous berthing of two 366-metre vessels.

On the landside, three new storage blocks and 15 additional truck lanes have been integrated, augmenting the terminal's booking system time slot availability by up to 30 per cent per hour from January 2024 onwards.

As part of Phase 3A, VICT acquired two automated ship-to-shore (STS) cranes, six auto container carriers (ACC), and six auto stacking cranes (ASC).

The ASCs have been operational since December 2023, supporting the expanded yard capacity.

These STS cranes, boasting a reach of 22 containers across and currently the largest port equipment in Australia, are now operational as well.

Phase 3B, slated for completion in 2026, will entail acquiring another automated STS crane, three ACCs, four ASCs, and constructing two additional storage blocks.
