Dalian port takes on and discharges large methanol-powered container ships for the first time
Date:2024-04-24 Readers:
A few days ago, the 2M alliance east route "Astrid Maersk" successfully completed the loading and unloading operations, sailed away from Dalian Container Terminal. This is the first time for Dalian Port to receive and unload large methanol-powered container ships, to promote the innovative development of the industry and help the Group to take an important step in green transformation.

"Astrid Maersk" is 350.6 metres long, 53.5 metres wide, 33.2 metres deep, with a maximum capacity of over 16,000 TEUs. This ship is the second one of the 18 large methanol-powered container ships newly ordered by Maersk, which was officially delivered and put into service in April this year.

Compared with traditional fuel container ships, the ship has a novel configuration, more energy-saving power fuel, environmental protection, safety and other characteristics. The use of renewable methanol can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 95%, and methanol, as a liquid fuel at room temperature, is safer than LNG, ammonia, hydrogen, etc., which has become a development direction of new green fuels in the shipping industry.

In order to do a good job of the ship's loading and unloading operations and shore power services, Dalian Container Terminal Company contacted the shipping company at the first time to obtain ship information, understand the ship's dynamics, and combined with the ship's structure and berthing time and other factors, to formulate a scientific programme of operations. At the same time, the whole tracking and monitoring of onshore power connection, to ensure stable and safe power supply. Through the close connection of all links, the company completed the loading and unloading operation of the first large methanol-powered ship and shore power service with high efficiency, high quality and high standard. The successful completion of this operation demonstrated the company's ability to guarantee the loading and unloading operation of new fuel container ships and shore power service.

In recent years, Dalian Container Terminal Company has actively implemented the relevant policies of "double carbon" strategy, accelerated the pilot application of wind power generation, electric collector trucks and hydrogen energy collector trucks, and continued to upgrade the berth and shore power equipment. At the same time, the company has taken the initiative to strengthen the cooperation with shipping companies on shore power, encourage shipping companies to actively develop shore power business, and support the operation resources and business policies for ships using shore power system, so as to help the green transformation of the port.
