WinGD Receives Engine Order for Ammonia Dual Fuel Aframax Tanker - World's First!
Date:2024-05-14 Readers:
WinGD, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), has been awarded a contract to supply the X-DF-A engine for the world's first ammonia dual-fuel powered Aframax tanker.

The X-DF-A ammonia dual-fuel engine is the latest addition to WinGD's portfolio of clean-fuel engines, which use high-pressure ammonia injection and approximately 5 per cent energy ignition oil. In both ammonia and diesel modes, it has the same power and speed range as the existing diesel engine.

The order builds on the previous collaboration between WinGD and AET to realise clean energy ship operations, with the two companies signing an agreement in July 2023 to collaborate with ALAM (operated and managed by MISC Malaysian Maritime Academy) on technology development and crew training, with the aim of preparing ammonia-powered ships for commissioning.

As early as the end of 2023, the WinGD X-DF-A Ammonia Dual Fuel Engine Safety Concept has received Approval-in-Principle (AiP) from Bureau Veritas (BV), which is a key demonstration of the safety of the Ammonia Dual Fuel Engine Compartment Concept for the safe and robust operation of ammonia vessels. The safety concept covers possible failure scenarios under foreseeable abnormal conditions and corresponding control measures, including how to safely utilise ammonia fuel and effectively control its risks.

The world's first ammonia dual-fuel powered Aframax tanker was ordered by AET, a subsidiary of Malaysian international shipping company MISC Group, and built by China Shipbuilding Dalian Shipbuilding, with a total of two vessels. The two sides signed the shipbuilding contract on 19th April this year, which is the first time for MISC Group to cooperate with China Shipbuilding Group.

With an overall length of about 250m, a beam of 44m, a depth of 21.2m and a deadweight of about 113,000 tonnes, the ship adopts the latest self-developed ship design, which has better performance in terms of energy consumption index, cargo carrying capacity and suitability; it is equipped with a Win-GD liquid-ammonia dual-fuel main engine, which meets the emission standard of IMO Tier III and the requirements of the EEDI Stage III, and it adopts liquid ammonia as the main fuel. The use of liquid ammonia as the main fuel can effectively reduce the emission of carbon oxides and sulphur oxides.

After delivery, the new vessel will provide services to PETCO Trading Labuan Company (PTLCL), the midstream service arm of Petronas.
