FRENCH shipping giant CMA CGM has alerted customers about a salvage operation mandated for a containership chartered for the Asia-West Africa route, reports Fort Lauderdale's Maritime Executive.
While specific details about the fire's severity have not been disclosed, the carrier advised shippers in a customer advisory to promptly inform their cargo insurers.
"We sincerely regret such an unfortunate situation that arose out of CMA CGM's control," said the company.
What is known is that the 8,800-TEU Northern Juvenile reported a cargo fire on May 26. The 108,827 dwt vessel was built in 2009 by Daewoo.
CMA CGM reports the vessel's position as 600 nautical miles from Port Klang, Malaysia, while other reports place the vessel about 100 nautical miles southwest of Bande Aceh, Indonesia.
"We are advised that, as a result of the fire, shipowners have entered into a salvage agreement with professional salvers under LOF (Lloyd's Open Forum) terms to provide firefighting and salvage assistance to the vessel," said consultancy WK Webster.
They warn shippers that "salvage security will be required," and if the General Average is declared, they could also face additional security demands.
