A world first, LNG-powered capesize ship transporting bauxite!
Date:2024-08-07 Readers:
Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) announced on Monday the successful completion of the world's first shipment of bauxite using a liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered vessel.

A capesize bulk carrier was used for the shipment, which carried bauxite mined by EGA's subsidiary, Guinea Alumina, and destined for China.

According to multi-industry consortium SEA-LNG, LNG-powered ships have been improved from tank to stern to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 28 per cent compared to traditional ships using marine fuel oil. This marks an important step in reducing carbon emissions for the global shipping industry.

According to the International Energy Agency, the global shipping industry is expected to produce more than 2 per cent of the world's greenhouse gas emissions in 2022. Therefore, EGA's adoption of LNG-powered vessels for bauxite transport this time is of great significance in promoting the green transformation of the shipping industry.

The bauxite transport was undertaken by the LNG dual-fuel vessel Ubuntu Empathy, operated by Anglo American and chartered by EGA. The vessel is part of Anglo American's fleet of 10 low-emission LNG dual-fuel vessels under charter.

Capesize vessels are among the largest bulk carriers in the world, with a length of up to 300 metres, equivalent to the length of two football pitches, and a width of 50 metres. These vessels are capable of carrying approximately 180,000 tonnes of bauxite EGA primarily uses capesize vessels to transport bauxite from Guinea to its alumina refinery in Abu Dhabi and to supply it to third-party customers around the world. Last year, EGA exported approximately 14.1 million wet metric tonnes of bauxite from Guinea.

EGA is the first Middle Eastern company to join the Global Shipping and Maritime Sustainability Initiative's Cargo by Sea Charter in 2023. In 2022, EGA signed an agreement with one of its shipping partners, ‘K’ Line, to develop and implement a new marine decarbonisation programme for EGA's bulk cargo routes in the Eastern Atlantic, Mediterranean and Indian Oceans. EGA signed an agreement with one of its shipping partners, ‘K’ Line, to develop and implement new marine decarbonisation technologies for EGA's bulk routes in the Eastern Atlantic, Mediterranean and Indian Ocean.

Bauxite is the ore from which aluminium is extracted, and EGA is setting a new benchmark for the greening of the global aluminium chain.
