The continuing impact of the Red Sea crisis! This shipowner's earnings are up 66 per cent

Merchant Marine Mitsui (MOL) recently announced its results for the first quarter of fiscal year 2024 (i.e., 1 April 2024 to 30 June 2024). The financial report disclosed that in the first quarter of fiscal year 2024, MOL achieved operating income of 435.9 billion yen, up 13.2% year-on-year, and operating profit of 40.7 billion yen, up 66.2% year-on-year. Merrill Mitsui said that ‘the Red Sea crisis led to a tightening of capacity supply via the Cape of Good Hope bypass and a significant increase in spot rates, leading to a significant increase in profit’ and expects its container ship business profit to continue to grow, ‘due to the Red Sea crisis, tensions will continue for the time being ‘.

MSC Mitsui's existing fleet consists of 58 bulk carriers of 8,221,000 dwt, with an average age of 12 years; 48 tankers of 7,640,000 dwt, with an average age of 11.7 years; 41 LNG carriers of 3,417,000 dwt and 6,344,000 Cu.m.; and 89 other vessels of 3,800,000 dwt. The fleet under construction consists of 52 vessels, including 20 LNG carriers, 1.890 million DWT, 3.476 million Cu.m.; 11 bulk carriers totalling 2.193 million DWT; 11 car carriers, 226,000 DWT, 77,000 Cu.m., and 10 other vessels, 1.570 million DWT.

The shipyards with which Shokoi Sanso's existing fleet has more cooperation are Naimura Shipbuilding, Nagasaki Shipyard and Mitsui Shipbuilding (Chiba), with Naimura Shipbuilding building 11 bulk carriers and three oil tankers, Nagasaki Shipyard building four oil tankers, nine container ships, seven LNG carriers, one LPG carrier and one car carrier, and Mitsui Shipbuilding (Chiba) building five oil tankers, three bulk carriers and three LNG carriers. Shipyards with more co-operation in the fleet under construction include Hanwha Marine, Qingdao Beihai and Dalian COSCO Kawasaki. Hanwha Marine constructed 16 LNG carriers, Qingdao Beihai constructed 7 bulk carriers and Dalian COSCO Kawasaki constructed 4 oil tankers.
