International Shipping
At least 400 ships of this type are needed
Date:2024-08-06 Readers:
Shipping has a key role to play in the hydrogen economy, according to a new report published by the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) in co-operation with Stefan Ulreich, Professor at the Biberach University of Applied Sciences (Germany).

As heavy industry moves towards cleaner energy sources, hundreds of ships will be needed to transport hydrogen from the point of production to the centres of demand, the report says. The study found that up to 411 new hydrogen carriers will be needed for long-distance trade to meet the global demand of 30 million tonnes of green hydrogen per year.

Heavy industry is expected to dominate global hydrogen demand by 2050, and ICS Secretary General Guy Platten said, ‘In order to make a net-zero emissions scenario possible by 2050, demand for hydrogen-based fuels will need to expand five-fold from current levels to around 500 million tonnes.’ He added that the shipping industry ‘has a key role to play as an enabler of the hydrogen economy’.

In Europe alone, up to 300 ships would be needed to support the 20 million tonnes of hydrogen per year target by 2030, half of which would come from imports.

Platten said, ‘Regulatory certainty is vital and governments are key to driving early adopters, by putting demand incentives ahead of supply support to enable procurement agreements.’ He emphasised that ‘one thing is certain, readiness in terms of port and infrastructure development is critical to removing barriers to maritime transport. This will allow both the maritime transport industry and other sectors to move forward, increasing energy security and enhancing diversification. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reshape the entire energy-maritime value chain.’

Ulreich said that up to 411 new hydrogen carriers will be needed to meet the 30 million tonne increase in global hydrogen demand, and up to 500 ships if transported as ammonia.
