China's first ‘ship-to-ship’ LNG refuelling for Ro-Ro vessels at terminals
Date:2024-08-20 Readers:
Recently, the LNG refuelling service capacity of Shanghai Port has reached a new level.

From 9th to 10th August, the newly launched Norwegian Ro-Ro vessel ‘Reynolds Aurora’ successfully completed the task of loading 1800 cubic metres of LNG fuel at Shanghai Nangang Terminal, which is the first time that ‘ship-to-ship’ LNG refuelling service for Ro-Ro vessels is carried out at the terminal in China. ‘This is the first time in China to implement LNG clean energy refuelling service for Ro-Ro vessels at the terminal.

‘The Linuo Aurora left its home port of Nantong, Jiangsu Province on 8 August to start its maiden voyage. As the world's largest and most environmentally friendly Ro-Ro vessel, it has 16 decks with a total of about 9,100 car parking spaces, is equipped with one low-speed dual-fuel main engine and three dual-fuel generators, and can run on both LNG and conventional fuels, as well as the ‘ammonia ready’ and ‘methanol ready’ classification symbols of DNV, making it the world's largest and most environmentally friendly Ro-Ro vessel. It is the first ship in the field of car carriers that can use carbon-neutral fuels, with ‘ammonia fuel ready’ and ‘methanol fuel ready’ classification symbols from DNV.

At 3:00 a.m. on 9 August, Lino Aurora docked successfully; at 13:46 a.m., the LNG bunkering vessel Harbour Future docked with Lino Aurora and started the bunkering operation; by 9 August, Lino Aurora was ready to use ammonia fuel and methanol fuel. At 13:46, the LNG filling vessel ‘Harbour Future’ docked with ‘Lino Aurora’ to start the refuelling operation; at 10:30 on 10th August, ‘Lino Aurora’ safely left the berth.

It is worth mentioning that this is also the first time for the ‘Harbour Future’ LNG bunkering vessel to leave Yangshan waters to refuel international vessels docking at Nangang Terminal. The successful refuelling of ‘Lino Aurora’ marks that Shanghai Port has successfully possessed the experience and capability of LNG refuelling service for Ro-Ro vessels in port.

The improvement of LNG refuelling service capability is not limited to this. Just before the ‘Harbour Future’ LNG refuelling vessel left Yangshan waters, the ‘Huaihe Energy Sailing’ successfully completed loading 6,000 cubic meters of LNG fuel at the Yangshan Port LNG Terminal at 11:00 p.m. on August 7, marking that the Yangshan Port has the ability to provide LNG bunkering service for two LNG bunkering vessels. This marks that Yangshan Port has the ability to replenish two LNG bunkering vessels, i.e., Yangshan Port LNG bunkering ushered in the ‘two-vessel stage’.

According to the introduction, ‘Huaihe Energy Set Sail’ is the first domestic 14,000 cubic metre liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering vessel to be put into operation. With the addition of ‘Huaihe Energy Sailing’, the green energy refuelling capacity of Yangshan Port will be further enhanced, further consolidating the international leading position of Shanghai's container hub port and empowering the construction of Shanghai's international shipping centre with the upgrading of port services.
