Chinese electric car maker BYD's roll-on/roll-off car carrier ‘Pathfinder 1’ has arrived at the Spanish port of Santander, according to a 16 August report on the website of Spain's Abecedarian newspaper. The ship, which has a capacity of 7,000 vehicles, was delivered on 10 January this year as part of BYD's plan to enter the European market.

The company plans to commission seven more such vessels in the coming months, the report said. The strategy of using its own ro-ro vessels to transport cars is unprecedented in the automotive industry. According to the brand itself, its strategy to offer competitively priced car products is to use a vertically integrated model. This has prompted the company to plan to build its own shipping force to avoid dependence on multinational shipping companies.
Since its arrival in the Spanish market in March 2023, BYD has become one of the largest selling plug-in hybrid car brands in the country. From January to July 2024, the company's sales growth has been phenomenal, increasing nearly tenfold. The brand has licensed more than 1,400 new cars in Spain this year.
Following the arrival of the Pathfinder 1 in Spain, experts expect these figures to increase significantly in the coming months and further close the gap with Tesla.
