Largest recycled ship sold this year to be dismantled soon
Date:2024-08-19 Readers:
According to Trade Winds, the largest recycled vessel sold to date in 2024, Shell Brazil's FPSO Fluminense (built 1975), is expected to arrive in Frederikshavn, northern Denmark, on Friday. The FPSO Fluminense, built in 1975 and owned by Shell Brazil, is expected to arrive at MARS Europe in Frederikshavn, northern Denmark, on Friday. The 356,400 dwt vessel will be green recycled by MARS.

The recycling operation is based on an EU-approved Green Recycling Facility, which will be commissioned in 2020 and is designed to handle large offshore assets, and the FPSO Fluminense is the largest recycling project MARS has ever undertaken.

The giant floating production, storage and offloading unit (FPSO) was originally converted from a giant tanker (ULCC) by Modec in 2002. It has been serving the Bijupira and Salema fields in the Campos Basin off the coast of Brazil for the past 20 years, contributing significant energy output to Shell.

However, sources in the South Asia region have widely expressed disappointment that the FPSO Fluminense has not been sent to a HKLCC-compliant facility in the Indian subcontinent for recovery.

‘We have known since Shell started the ship recycling process over a year ago that the vessel would be travelling to Denmark. They have signed a letter of notification that the ship will be dismantled for recycling at MARS in May 2023.’ An Indian cash buyer told Trade Winds.

‘Green Shipyard in India wanted the opportunity to recycle the vessel, but Shell approached MARS directly.’

Pricing details of the contract have not yet been disclosed to the market.

MARS says its 280,000 square metre facility in Frederikshavn is one of the most modern and environmentally friendly ship recycling yards currently in operation. The facility's drainage system is located beneath the surface of the compacted gravel granular material, to ensure that it does not pose a hazard to groundwater. The advanced waste separation system ensures a recycling rate of well over 90 per cent, providing an efficient and environmentally friendly recycling process, the company says.

Projects undertaken by the yard include the recycling of Teekay's 43,600 dwt FPSO Petrojarl Foinaven (built in 1997) and 20,800 dwt FPSO Petrojarl Banff (built in 1997).

‘The FPSO Fluminense, originally named the Sea Saint tanker, was built by Swedish shipbuilder Kockums at the Malmö shipyard. The vessel was originally ordered by the Swedish company Salenrederierna, which operated it until 1984, when it was sold to Saudi Arabian interests, who traded it as the Safina Sahara.

In 2002, Modec acquired the vessel and converted it to an FPSO before Shell Brazil took ownership.
