OREGON's Port of Coos Bay has received US$100 million in state funding for a new container terminal, reports NBC News.
The Pacific Coast Intermodal Port aims to be the first fully ship-to-rail container terminal on the US west coast.
Cargo will move directly from vessels to the Coos Bay Rail Line, connecting with Union Pacific in Eugene for Midwest shipments.
The project intends to reduce highway truck traffic, improve logistics efficiency, and lower diesel emissions.
Officials estimate it could generate over $59 million in annual state income tax revenue.
The project is expected to create thousands of construction and permanent jobs in southwest Oregon.
Executive director Melissa Cribbins said the terminal is a key investment in rural Oregon's infrastructure and economy.
Federal transportation grants are also supporting the project, which is slated for completion in five years.
The permitting process for the port has already begun.
