Asia's maritime industry is undergoing a major transformation driven by decarbonisation, digitalisation and regional collaboration, said DNV's newly appointed regional head Antony DSouza, reported Singapore's Manifold Times.
Antony DSouza, Senior Vice President and Regional Manager for Southeast Asia, Pacific and India at DNV, said the region is embracing green shipping and clean energy transition. Governments and shipowners are investing in alternative fuels such as ammonia, methanol and LNG, alongside electrification and hybrid solutions for short-sea shipping.
DSouza cited outcomes from MEPC 83, including a greenhouse gas fuel-intensity standard and global pricing mechanism, as key drivers of regulatory clarity and innovation. He added that digitalisation is accelerating efficiency and safety through smart port infrastructure, AI, and remote surveys.
DNV is supporting this shift through its Maritime Decarbonisation and Smart Shipping Centre of Excellence, established in Singapore in 2021. The Centre provides strategic advisory and technical support, including tailored decarbonisation plans, feasibility studies, and guidance on alternative fuels and technologies.
DSouza said regional collaboration on emissions data and transparency could be a small but impactful step. Standardised reporting would help smaller operators benchmark performance and support regulatory alignment.
DNV's digital tools, including the Pathway to Zero and Veracity platforms, help shipowners model fuel scenarios and make data-driven investment decisions. The firm also engages in joint industry projects on wind-assisted propulsion, shore power integration, and ammonia bunkering safety.
DSouza expressed hope that APAC will continue to lead with ambition and cooperation. He said the region's scale, diversity and innovation capacity position it as a global catalyst for sustainable shipping.
