MSC is deepening its relationship with China through new ship management operations and vessel orders, even as the US considers fees on Chinese-built ships, reports Fort Lauderdale's Maritime Executive.
MSC launched MSC Ship Management (Ningbo) and MSC Crewing Services (China), aiming to recruit 2,000 Chinese seafarers by 2026. The company already employs 700 and holds a 16 per cent market share at Ningbo port.
The new entities will provide crew training and ship management services, supporting MSC's global fleet of nearly 1,000 vessels. MSC's CEO Prabhat Jha cited Ningbo's strategic location and efficiency as key factors.
MSC has 131 new vessels on order, totalling 2.2 million TEU, with about half being built in China. Recent orders include six 22,000-TEU ships and six 21,000-TEU units.
The expansion comes as the US Trade Representative prepares to impose fees on Chinese-built ships calling at US ports. MSC appears undeterred, continuing its growth strategy.
