Greek shipowner Minerva Dry has reportedly ordered three 3,100-TEU container vessels from Penglai Zhongbai Jinglu Ship Industry in China, continuing its investment spree in the sector, reports London's Riviera Media.
Shipbroking sources say the building slots were initially held by Norwegian non-operating owner Songa Box, backed by Arne Blystad, but talks collapsed, allowing Minerva Dry to take over the order. Each vessel is estimated to cost US$45 million.
Minerva Dry entered the container segment in October 2023 and has since acquired eight feeder vessels, spending over $250 million. It is also linked to orders for four 1,800-TEU ships at Yangzijiang and up to four more at Huanghai Shipbuilding.
The company operates as the dry bulk and container arm of Minerva Marine, which manages 18 ships. Minerva Marine's core business remains tankers, with 54 units under management, while its LNG arm, Minerva Gas, controls seven LNG carriers.
Songa Box, meanwhile, is said to be pursuing a letter of intent with Taizhou Sanfu Ship Engineering for two firm plus two optional 3,100-TEU vessels. It currently operates nine container ships ranging from 1,732 to 2,846 TEU, according to Alphaliner.
