The Alabama Port Authority and APM Terminals Mobile will build a new 1,300-foot container berth at the Port of Mobile, boosting capacity by 50 per cent, reports Ventura, California's gCaptain.
The US$131 million project is funded through federal appropriations and private investment from Maersk's APM Terminals. Construction begins in 2026 and is expected to take two years.
Once complete, the terminal will handle three ultra-large containerships simultaneously, with annual berth capacity reaching 1.4 million TEUs supported by seven ship-to-shore cranes.
The project follows the $366 million deepening of Mobile Harbor to 50 feet, making it the deepest container port in the US Gulf. Additional investments include a 33-acre yard expansion, rail upgrades and a new flyover bridge for on-dock rail access.
APM Terminals and the Port Authority have extended their operating concession through 2058, with two 10-year renewal options. The agreement includes increased lease payments to support the port's investment.
The new berth will sit at the southern end of the terminal, adjacent to 25 acres earmarked for future logistics and storage development.
APM Terminals is also investing $500 million in a new container terminal at Louisiana Gateway Port, with 200 acres of initial development and potential expansion to 900 acres.
