Teesport and Hartlepool have introduced automated weigh-bridges capable of handling up to 7,000 tonnes of bulk cargo per day, improving safety and reducing turnaround times, reported Colchester's Dry Cargo International.
PD Ports has installed five fully automated weigh-bridges at Tees Dock and a new system at Hartlepool, replacing manual processes that previously caused bottlenecks and delays.
The new infrastructure includes automated traffic lights, ANPR cameras and driver self-service terminals, integrated with the Commtrac terminal operating system launched at Tees Bulks Quay in 2023.
Grant Honzik, director of bulk operations at PD Ports, said automation has transformed operations, delivering faster service, reduced congestion and more accurate data for customers.
Benefits for port users include quicker turnaround, improved weighing accuracy and enhanced digital reporting to support logistics planning.
The weigh-bridge programme is part of PD Ports' broader strategy to modernise bulk operations through digital systems, electric cranes and specialist logistics vehicles.
Mr Honzik said the upgrades future-proof operations and reflect PD Ports' commitment to smarter, safer and more reliable cargo handling.
