Global Ship Lease buys three 8,600-TEUers for US$90 million
Date:2025-12-10 Readers:

Global Ship Lease has agreed to acquire three Korean-built containerships of 8,600 TEU each with ECO upgrades for US$90 million, reported GlobeNewswire. The vessels, built in 2010 and 2011, come with attached charters at below-market rates and flexible durations, with latest redeliveries in mid-2030.

The company said the ships are expected to generate $88 million in aggregate revenues if charters run their full terms. At a scrap price of $400 per LWT, the vessels would have a combined scrap value of $40 million. With the additions, Global Ship Lease's fleet will rise to 71 ships totalling 422,567 TEU.

Delivery of the vessels is scheduled around year-end 2025. The company plans to fund the purchase initially with cash on hand, with financing options to be considered later.

Chairman George Youroukos said the acquisition de-risks the transaction while offering upside earnings potential. He described the deal as "three for the price of one" compared with current charter-free values, adding that the purchase reflects GSL's disciplined approach to fleet renewal.

Earlier this year, Global Ship Lease sold four older, smaller vessels for nearly the same aggregate value as this acquisition. Youroukos said recycling capital into newer, larger assets will strengthen the fleet and benefit shareholders over the long term.

Global Ship Lease, incorporated in the Marshall Islands, operates a diversified fleet of mid-sized and smaller containerships. As of September 30, 2025, its 69-vessel fleet had an average age of 18 years and contracted revenue of $1.92 billion, rising to US$2.40 billion including charterer-controlled options.
